The calculation is made per workplace (Arbeitsstätte), usually per site or branch. If your company has several sites, add them one by one.

The rules at a glance

The basis is §§ 82a and 77a of the Austrian Employee Protection Act (ASchG). The calculator applies exactly these rules.

1.2 h per year

Office workplaces

Per employee at office workplaces and comparable workplaces with low physical strain.

1.5 h per year

Other workplaces

Per employee at all other workplaces, for example in workshops, warehouses, catering or nursing.

+0.5 h per year

Night work

Supplement for each employee who does night work at least 50 times per calendar year within the meaning of the Night Shift Work Act (Nachtschwerarbeitsgesetz).

35 / 40 / 25 %

Allocation

At least 35 % occupational medicine, at least 40 % safety specialists. The remaining 25 % can be allocated freely.

About prevention time

Does prevention time also apply to small companies?

For workplaces with up to 50 employees, the law does not prescribe a fixed number of hours. There, care takes the form of regular workplace inspections by an occupational physician and a safety specialist (§ 77a ASchG): at least once per calendar year for 11 to 50 employees, at least once every two calendar years for up to 10 employees, and once every three calendar years in pure office workplaces. From 51 employees per workplace, the prevention time under § 82a applies.

Whom do I count as an employee?

All employees of the workplace are counted, including apprentices. For prevention time, part-time employees count proportionally, according to the extent of their employment. Employees on construction sites and external work locations are counted too, unless separate care has been arranged for them. If the number of employees fluctuates strongly, for example in seasonal businesses, the foreseeable average number per year is used.

How is the time rounded?

The annual prevention time is rounded to whole hours per workplace: fractions below 0.5 are rounded down, from 0.5 rounded up. For safe planning, the calculator shows the individual shares (occupational medicine, safety specialists, freely allocable) rounded up to full 15 minutes. The sum of the shares may therefore be slightly above the total time, but the minimum time is never undercut.

Do I have to adjust the time immediately when staff numbers change?

No. A recalculation within the current calendar year is only necessary if the number of employees on which the calculation is based changes by more than 5 %.

How is the time distributed over the year?

The time of the safety specialists and the time of occupational medicine must each be spread over the calendar year, taking the company’s circumstances into account. Each visit must last at least two hours (§ 82a para. 6 ASchG). With little occupational medicine time, I plan at least two hours per visit; as long as regular care spread over the year is possible, I am also happy to provide more hours per visit so that the care remains practical. The time can also be split between several people if that makes sense organisationally or professionally.

Can part of the occupational medicine time be provided by a specialist assistant?

Yes. Up to 30 % of the occupational medicine prevention time may be provided by the occupational health specialist service (arbeitsmedizinische Fachassistenz, AFA) (§ 82c ASchG). Requirements are a health profession with at least two years of professional experience and a recognised training for the occupational health specialist service. The work is carried out under the direction of the occupational physician, and the maximum limits of § 82 (for example for examinations and further training) must not be exceeded as a result.

How binding is the result?

The calculator provides well-founded guidance based on the text of the law (status of the query in the Austrian Federal Legal Information System: 22 October 2026). It does not replace legal advice. Special cases, such as training workshops, integrative companies or companies with several buildings, we are happy to discuss in person.
